Freediving, snorkelling or scuba: which one is my trip?

By Tania Panés

The differences, explained simply, and where each one fits.

Three different ways to be in the water

Freediving means diving on a held breath. Snorkelling centres on observing from the surface with a mask and snorkel. SCUBA uses breathing equipment underwater. These terms describe different activities; they do not by themselves establish the requirements for a particular expedition.

Which Maldives trip is which?

The Maldives freediving liveaboard is a freediving-focused trip through the atolls. The tiger shark expedition in Fuvahmulah is a separate SCUBA trip. Open Water SCUBA certification is required for Fuvahmulah; confirm any additional current conditions with Beyond the Blue.

Do all other trips need no certification?

Do not assume that. The confirmed information here does not establish a universal rule for every departure. Check the specific Beyond the Blue page and explain your actual water experience before choosing a trip.

A guide is not a replacement for training

Tania is an instructor and expedition leader, but these expeditions should not be treated as regularly bookable freediving training. Individual coaching is occasional, on request. Use the trip requirements to decide whether an experience matches your preparation.
